A 1000-year old ewer, carved from flawless rock crystal and decorated with cheetahs and link chains, was sold by Christie’s in London for more than Ј3 million on October 7, 2008. The ewer from the Fatimid royal treasury in Egypt was earlier mistaken for a French claret jug. Christie’s described the ewer as “one of the rarest and most desirable works of art from the Islamic world”

For almost two centuries, this reliquary fooled the experts. Its provenance included Count Renesse-Breidbach and J.P. Morgan. In 1980, technical investigation showed the rock crystal at the center to be authentic but the rest is of Nineteenth Century craftsmanship. Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Rock crystal carving in the form of a human skull. Possibly Aztec or Mixtec, Mexico (ca. 14th-15th), or Spanish Colonial. Height 21 cm
Museum of Mankind, London, Great Britain

Rock crystal skull

Scientists at the British Museum studied traces of tool marks preserved in the highly polished surfaces of this crystal skull. These show that it was extensively worked using rotary cutting wheels, unknown in Mexico before the arrival of the Spanish in 1519. Furthermore, analysis of inclusions in the quartz crystal indicates that the large block of material was obtained in the nineteenth century from a source far beyond ancient Mexican trade links, probably Brazil or Madagascar.
