Несмотря на популярность темы смерти в средневековом искусстве, ее образ долгое время имел весьма расплывчатые очертания. Сначала она выступала в облике апокалиптического всадника, проносящегося над грудой поверженных тел, затем в виде низвергающейся с высоты Эринии с крылами летучей мыши, далее в образе демона, который лишь в XV в. сменяется образом черта, а в последствии и скелета.
