La Mort à Cheval (Death on Horseback)
Stunning etching by the supreme draftsman and etcher Stefano Della Bella, dated 1663.
Della Bella was a prolific draftsman and etcher who succeeded Jacques Callot at the Medici grand-ducal court as a professional designer-printmaker. The roots of his graphic style lie in the calligraphic Mannerism of Callot, but during the course of his career Della Bella developed into an exuberant Baroque artist. His work remained influential for many decades and has been actively collected up to the present day. Della Bella was born into an artistic family; his father was a sculptor, and his three brothers all became artists.

Death and the Standing Naked One,1547
Engraving by the wonderful German printmaker Hans Sebald Beham, 1547.

Death Three Naked Women, circa 1520-50
Engraving by the wonderful German printmaker Hans Sebald Beham, circa 1520-50.
Barthel's work named as the first state in Hollstein (after Pauli), the second state is Sebald Beham's reworking of the plate of around 1546-50 with his own monogram.
The composition is based on Dürer's Four Witches of 1497, the image of death appearing to three women also popular in Baldung's work.

Death and the Indecent Pair
Engraving by the wonderful German printmaker Hans Sebald Beham, 1529.

Lovers Surprised by Death
A colour woodcut printed from three blocks
The image of Death became widespread in late medieval Christian art, particularly in Germany. Rarely in art, however, did Death shatter the lives of mortals with the violence shown here by Burgkmair (1473-1531).

The Nun's Dance of Death

-------------------------
Holbein's Dances of Death"
In 1538, Hans Holbein the Younger publishes his 'Totentanz' (Dance of death), a work of art that will redefine its own genre. In Holbein's work, Death is still very aggressive; however, it does not dance with the deads anymore, but intervenes directly in scenes of everyday life. Paris' dance of death had dominated the genre in the late Middle-Ages; from 1538 on, the work of Holbein became the ultimate reference. The series of 41 wood engravings was created around 1526 and published 12 years later in Basle. Holbein was not the first to use the woodcut technique instead of the traditional fresco to create a dance of death.

Paul Rumsey
His work looks more 15th century fantasy or 19th century graphic print than anything from our own century; I mean that in the best of ways.
