Мебель с дополнительными функциями, или "два в одном" начали делать очень давно, а уж секретов и хитростей, удобных приспособлений в ней было гораздо больше, чем сейчас.

Столы-стулья стали делать в самом начале колониального периода, с 1600-х годов.
Позже они стали очень популярны в Америке, так как семьи часто переезжали в крытых вагоначиках и кибитках, и жили в довольно тесном временном жилье, двигаясь на запад. За ними вполне могли сесть несколько человек, чтобы поесть.
После еды стол превращался в стул или скамью.
Такие вещи также служили в качестве хранилища, возможно, для одеял.

------------------Wainscot Chairs----------

A chair table. The table top is put back in the illustration, so that the piece can be pushed against the wall and used as a chair. Chair tables always had the drawer beneath the seat. They are inventoried as early as 1644.
