Elephant clock

The elephant clock was a medieval Muslim invention by al-Jazari (1136–1206), consisting of a weight powered water clock in the form of an elephant. The various elements of the clock are in the housing on top of the elephant. They were designed to move and make a sound each half hour.Подробно:

Antique industrial clock desk compendium, French in form of anvil and tools.A quite amazing quality desk set and compendium in the industrial idiom constructed of black marble with gilt and silvered bronze. The set comprises an eight day clock with baropmeter and thermomenter with inkwells, pentray and pen wipe. Set upon a black marble base with inkwells and penwipe inset to the front. The large gilt bronze double ended anvil is shown with two industrial hammers on top, inset is the 8 day key wound clock with white enamel dial, roman numerals and blued steel hands. To the left of the clock is a silvered bronze set square and circular saw blade inset into which is a thermometer on a finely engraved and silvered dial. To the right of the clock is a barometer set into a gilt and silvered bronze cog wheel. France circa 1890. 9.5 inches high by 14 inches wide and 9 inches deep ( 23.75 cms by 35 cms by 22.5 cms ). What an amazing gift for any kind of engineer.



Antique automaton clock, French antique in ormolu and red marble.

Fine ormolu and red marble ormolu automata clock in the form of a Gothic well, based on a similar piece in the Wallace Collection. There is an 8 day timepiece movement below the well and a barometer below that. The case stands upon a shaped griotte marble base. The fine ormolu case exhibits corbels rising to peacock finials and to the top of the cupola, dolphins. To the sides are seamonsters cast in high relief. A separate movement drives the automata in the form of a twisting glass rod giving the appearance of flowing water. The cupola is held up by four beautiful columns in the form of palm trees. France circa 1880. 22.5 inches high by 8 inches square ( 56 cms by 20 cms).
