At the top of this chair is carved the monogram MA for Marie-Antoinette, queen to Louis XVI of France. We do not know which of her palaces it comes from, although Sené supplied similar suites of chairs to her at the Château de Saint-Cloud, at Versailles and at the Tuileries. It resembles the Saint-Cloud set most closely, but where those chairs have a sphinx-head carved at the top of the arm-support, this chair has the head of the goddess Diana.

The design of the stool closely follows that of a marble seat in an unspecified location in Rome. Here the stool is made from beech wood, painted in white and grey to simulate the appearance of marble. Beech wood would have been much easier and less costly to carve than marble, and resulted in a more flexible seat which weighed less and could be moved around without difficulty.

[identity profile] marinni.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 11:21 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] greenorang.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] artbrus.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] marinni.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] greenorang.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] marinni.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] pablo-noel.livejournal.com 2009-12-18 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
