Servants amusing themselves; a man dressing a woman's hair while she sits wtih one foot on a tub, admiring herself in a mirror, watched by a woman standing in front of the fireplace with trimmings on the table in front of her and mimicked by a child on the right while a kitten plays with the ribbons of her hat, with a couple sitting to left, singing and playing the lute, accompanied by a howling dog who sits on a music book marked 'A Trio by Signr.' and a woman washing clothes in a large tub in the right foreground; after Collet. 1772

Three Bow Street officers burst open the door (right) of a room where three persons are sitting up in bed, much alarmed at their entry. The highwayman or burglar in the centre, wearing a night-cap, spills the contents of a punch-bowl held in his left hand; over his arm is a netted purse containing coins. The two girls wear mob-caps, one (right) seizes the man's arm in terror, the other (left) takes up one of a pair of pistols lying by the bed (right). On the ground lie top-boots, a mask, &c, the man's coat lies across the foot of the bed, on it is a bank-note. The constables are forcing backwards furniture with which the door had been barricaded; a chair, placed on a table, is falling over. On the wall is a framed print of Jack Sheppard, shackled and sitting on the ground in prison. The foremost Bow Street officer, wearing a striped waistcoat, has a sword under his arm; behind him are two men with constable's staves. 1 May 1781

To the left, two chimneysweeps are playing with her muff, and beside them, her hat and fur-lined robe have been cast to the ground; in the left foreground two cocks engage in a stand-off.

A maid-servant (left) stoops to fasten the buttons at the right. knee. A poodle, partly shaved, barks at the actress; it stands on a play bill inscribed "and the Part of Capt Macheath by Miss ." Painter of genre low-life subjects; b. London; d. London 1780; studied St. Martin's Lane Academy and was pupil of Lambert; exhibited FS 1761-80 and posthumously 1783; popularized by engravings by John Goldar; according to Alexander, Collet's output falls into three periods: in the late 1760s, a number of his designs were engraved by Goldar and others for Thomas Bradford of Fleet Street; 1768-73, prints after his work were jointly published by Robert Sayer and John Smith, and from 1774-76 by Sayer and Bennett; 1777-81, mezzotints after his designs published by Carington Bowles.

А вообще, картины быта "дикого капитализма" в Англии - это не для слабонервных. Это был такой кошмар... Я имею в виду полную свободу слова в печати, свобода бизнеса, граничащая с преступлениеями (вроде торговли девственницами), но при этом - страшные наказания за налоговые махинации.
